Questions and aftercare

Everything you need to know before, during and after your appointment.

How old do I need to be?

You must be 18 or over and bring valid photo ID. It's against the law in the UK to tattoo anyone under 18, even with parental consent.

Is getting a tattoo safe?

Yes, when it's done by a professional in a clean, sterile environment. We follow strict hygiene and safety standards, including sterile equipment. Follow your aftercare to keep the risk of infection low.

Does it hurt?

There's some discomfort, depending on placement and your own pain tolerance. Most people find it very manageable. Eat a good meal, sleep well the night before, wear loose clothing and keep your breathing steady.

How much does a tattoo cost?

It depends on size, detail, placement and the artist. Artists charge by the piece or by a day rate. Send an enquiry through GetInk and we'll give you a personal quote.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes. A non-refundable deposit secures your appointment. If your deposit is to be deducted from your final balance, we’ll let you know when you’re booking, alongside your quote. Resident artists need 7 days' notice to move a date; junior and apprentice artists need 3 days.

Can I see my design before the appointment?

Designs are usually shown on the day. It protects the artist's creative process, avoids endless revisions on busy schedules, and means any tweaks are talked through properly in person.

Should I shave the area first?

No, leave it to your artist. They'll shave it on the day so the skin is fresh and free from irritation.

Do you do cover-ups?

Yes, several of our artists do cover-ups. Not every tattoo can be covered, so add clear photos of the existing piece to your GetInk enquiry. If it's too dark, laser lightening first may be suggested.

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

Most tattoos heal on the surface in 7 to 14 days. Some itching, peeling and light scabbing is normal. Don't pick or scratch, and avoid soaking it (baths, swimming, saunas) for 14 days. Showers are fine.

Will my tattoo fade?

Good aftercare keeps it sharp. Over time, sun, skin ageing and high-friction areas like hands and feet can cause fading. Wear SPF on healed tattoos all year round.

Can I give blood after a tattoo?

In the UK you can donate blood four months after your tattoo.

What if I'm ill on the day?

Please don't come in. Contact us as soon as possible to reschedule.
